do you have a sql server on the same machine as php with a user root without a password? sounds like a very bad idea as long as it’s not a local dev machine.

If you are using cPanel, that means it is hosted, which means you wouldn’t be using root to access the database to begin with. It also means, that they will have sample connection scripts.
