Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Sorry guys and gals, just wanted to blow off a little steam…

Has anyone noticed the increased use of @ in peoples scripts?
It’s a little bug-bear of mine, It gets right on my nerves! >:(

@mysql_blah blah blah…
Why would you suppress an error instead of fixing it??

Just don’t get it…
Rant over…

Red :slight_smile:

That shutop trend is a very, very bad one. It will die soon once people figure out how to code properly, however. Some of it is also due to the way certain PHP extensions work, and the old MySQL (now deprecated) extension is one example.

One day people will transition to proper error handling, and everything will be fine again.

It is worth knowing that the shutop operator (@) does three things when you use it:

  • sets error_reporting to ~E_ALL
  • executes function
  • sets error_reporting back to what it was
    So, it is incredibly inefficient!

I look forward to that day very much. :slight_smile:

I hope it’s a trend that will die soon. Tho I admit I’m no senior developer I would never suppress error reporting. The reason why things become deprecated is because there are either more secure or efficient ways of doing things that everyone should be using prior to it really being removed/deprecated.

Any of such trend should be occupied properly. Well know even in our daily life a number of useless trends are in and in education just a degree with good introduction (which instead have nothing for future) is chosen. Thanks for sharing about the faults of that buddy.
