Accepting Money automatically with PHP

My back end is PHP. That’s why I’m here.

I really just want a conceptual run down. I’m not asking you to hold my hand and explain everything. I just want to make sure my thinking is right because I haven’t done this before.
I want to make sure I’m not missing any concepts when I attempt this.

I need to be able to accept payments via PayPal (at least. I’d love to support other payment options)

Things I know I Need:
I know I have to use their API. So that means an API key that PHP will send cURL requests to.
I know I need to maintain my own records as well. I have a MySQL database (transactionID many-to-1 userID)

Logic Flow:
Send user to PayPal with a variable that keeps track of who that user is. (a transaction ID)
User enters information on the paypal site
The user is sent back to my site once the payment has been confirmed.
The payment being confirmed means Paypal has sent a request to my site that carries data that I’ve told paypal to send me back (a transaction ID) When my site gets this from paypal I know to increment the credits on the user associated with that transaction ID.

Are my concepts right?

Maybe my terminology is wrong all this time, but I was thought once you get a response back from Paypal then you would credit the customer. Meaning you would decrement the credits, but I could be wrong? To me you wouldn’t want to increment the credits for that would be giving more buying power. Anyways, in short I believe you are correct in your thinking, just as long as you wait for Paypal to respond with processing the payment and with the digital age that is usually within 24 hours.

The user would purchase credits for the site. ($1 minimum)
The user can then use these credits ( essentially 1 cent each ) to make a small ad.

I remember playing with the IPN a while back, here is what I have:

I stopped working on it just before I hooked it up to a db, the ipn.php under if ($verified) is where you validate/remove subscriptions.
