I was starting to install xampp and wondered what is the best version to download and install for Window7? On my host they offer PHP 5.56, 7.0, and 7.1 and I am currently using v7.0 on my domains. Is v7.1 the latest stable release or is it a beta? I can easily switch my domains to use v7.1 and install xampp with PHP 7.1 but wonder about backwards compatibility etc.

Php 7.2.2 is the current release. 7.1 has issues. Stay away from it. 7.0 is already over 3 years (Dec 03, 2015) and numerous versions behind.
So if my host only offers up to 7.1 on my VPS, I would be better off using 7.0 there and also with xampp for testing?? I was using PHP v5.6 up until recently and that is when I was running Joomla websites.

If you have a VPS you should be able to run any version of Php you want.
I just knew you were gonna say that. ;D I forgot to tell you I have had the VPS for less than a month and am under severe learning curve syndrome. I know I could do that, but I want to take things one step at a time while I am learning how to admin this VPS. So for now I think using the vendor supplied choice may be better…Maybe not, but I need another 30 days of self training.
