I need to make a clock and set timeout using jquerry

I need to make this clock using jquery but i dont really understand why jquery is neccesary and what the benifits are. I am pretty new to php so going to jquery page doesnt help really. So am i using it to be able to run javascript on a php page, or is it used to load a php page with the script for the clock?? please help thank you
